Not Just Another Test: PSAT, SAT, and ACT Notes

The college search and application process can be fun and exciting, while at the same time being a bit unnerving and daunting. After all, it is ONE decision that will impact the rest of your life. To assist as you begin to plan ahead, here are some important details about standardized test.

It is important to remember that the SAT and ACT are not just tests, but they can make the difference between a yes and no for admissions and scholarships.

PSAT

You may take this test as early as 7th grade. However, the year that is most important (in regards too this test) is your 11th grade year. The scores from your junior year may qualify you for some very coveted merit based scholarships. In December of your junior year, these scores will be mailed to your home. These scores may give you a sense of how you might do on the SAT, and let you know what areas you may need to focus more on.

ACT

This standardized test is generally more popular in the Midwest , and scores can be converted to compare to the SAT. The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas—English, mathematics, reading, and science. The writing test, which is optional, measures skills in planning and writing a short essay.

Please contact your high school counselor or perspective colleges directly to determine if you will need to take this test.

SAT Reasoning Test

Juniors please plan to take this test at least twice during the spring of your 11th grade year. Breakthrough Atlanta recommends that you take advantage of our winter prep classes and register for the March 10 test. It is also recommended that you have completed at least Algebra 1 and/or Algebra 2. This test covers reading, writing, and math.

SAT Subject Tests

Some colleges require SAT subject tests in addition to the basic reasoning test. It is recommended that you contact perspective schools directly to determine if you will need to take subject tests.

If you have questions are concerns please contact Mrs. Octavia at (404)262-3032 ext. 1173.
