Frequently Asked Questions

"If you ask no questions, you will gain no knowledge."
-- Central African proverb

What is Breakthrough?

Breakthrough Atlanta (formerly Summerbridge Atlanta) is a rigorous academic program with two parts: a summer and a school-year program. Breakthrough works to provide a pathway to college for motivated middle school students, and to train talented high school and college students for careers as educators. Breakthrough Atlanta is part of the national Breakthrough Collaborative, which consists of 26 programs built around the “Students Teaching Students” philosophy.

What happens at Breakthrough?

During the summer at Breakthrough, middle school students take classes in Math, English, History, and Science, and Foreign Language. Students also choose from electives such as dance, art, or journalism. Breakthrough students make a 6 year commitment to the program, coming for six weeks during the summers before seventh and eighth grade, and twice a month during the school years. After graduating from middle school, students become part of the college preparatory program, which works with them throughout high school, providing workshops on high school admissions, additional summer opportunities, SAT /ACT prep, college admissions, financial aid, etc.

Who are Breakthrough students?

Breakthrough students are motivated, hard working, open to new ideas and experiences, and excited to make new friends with their peers and teachers. Breakthrough students want to achieve academically, plan to attend college, and believe in their ability to make a difference in their community.

Who are Breakthrough teachers?

Breakthrough teachers are talented high school and college students who are considering education as a career. They come from many different backgrounds, but are all between 17-22 years of age! They are good students and want to share their love of learning with younger people.

How much does Breakthrough cost?

Every Breakthrough student’s tuition is provided as a scholarship, made possible by many friends and businesses. In return, every student must be fully committed to meeting high expectations.

Is transportation provided?

Yes, during the summer and school year program sessions, students are brought to and from Lovett on buses.

Do students have to bring a lunch?

No, we will provide breakfast and lunch every day for all students during the summer. Snacks/lunch are provided during the school year Saturday sessions.

Is there homework?

Of course! Breakthrough is an academic program for students who want to work hard, learn more, and have fun. Students must do their homework to be a part of the program.

How do students become part of the program?

Current sixth and seventh-grade students who attend public schools in the metro area may apply to Breakthrough between January and March of each year. We would like to accept every student into the program, but because we have a limited number of spaces, we cannot. While everyone may not be accepted, applying to be a part of something new is always worthwhile! Applications are available on the Breakthrough Atlanta website.

How can one become a Breakthrough teacher?

Current high school juniors, seniors, and college students may apply to teach at any Breakthrough program through The Breakthrough Collaborative website at www.breakthroughcollaborative.org. Teaching applications for the upcoming summer are available from November-April of each year.

Does Breakthrough recruit students for The Lovett School ?

No. The Lovett School houses and supports our program but does not actively recruit our students. Breakthrough students may apply to any public or independent school they choose, as long as the school is a good fit for them.
