Latin I -- 7A

Ms. Fleming

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Latin IA introduces and practices Latin reading, vocabulary, grammar and syntax. For one of the first times ever for some students, we will break apart and analyze separate words and sentences. We will also study mythology and do individual and class projects.

You will discover that your study habits may determine your success and enjoyment of Latin. You'll receive a monthly sheet with all assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects. The best tip for your success is for you to notice daily where we are and make an effort to keep up. Please ask questions -- as many and as often as needed -- if you don't understand things presented in class.

TEXTS: Ecce Romani - Book I (Red Hardback)

MATERIALS: 1 3 -Ring Binder

1 Packet of Dividers

3 Packs of 3x5 Index Cards

1 container for vocabulary cards: file box or zipper pouch or cards on rings

NOTEBOOK: Your class Latin notebook should be divided into the following sections. I will evaluate your notebook periodically for neatness and inclusion of all materials for a quiz grade:

1. Notes & Handouts: handouts & class notes

2. Cheat Sheets : vocabulary for each reading in chronological order

3. Vocabulary: packets and practice sheets

4. Homework: grammar exercises or handouts.

5. Quizzes & Tests : vocabulary, translation, grammar quizzes

HOMEWORK:

You need to complete your homework carefully in order to master Latin. Doing your homework in morning homeroom or between classes will bring poor results. Please be aware that doing your homework with another student's open in front of you is a serious Honor Code violation. However, you may work together in Study Hall should your advisor permit. If your advisor is of the opinion that one of you is doing the work and the other is merely recording answers, that is an Honor Code violation as well.

Incomplete or no homework means three points (or a prorate) lost to your homework "bucket." You may regain one of those points by reporting to tutorial by the following day for a make-up assignment.

WEBSITE

You can check homework and look for further practice and answers on my Latin homepage. From the Lovett homepage, you may search for my name or get to the Middle School Resource Network blog, then team and classroom links.  Or type in the following address :

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:

You are to respect your classmates in your demeanor and remarks to them. You are to respect the learning needs of yourself and others by raising your hand to speak, arriving to class on time, bringing all materials (including blank looseleaf), and paying attention.

GRADING:

Please note that there will be a lot of little quizzes (10 min. average). As long as you are prepared for each one, you should find smaller quizzes over smaller chunks of information to be less intimidating than less frequent bigger ones would be.

25% Tests

20% Participation & Homework

10% Projects

10% Cumulative Test

TUTORIAL:

I will hold tutorials in from 3:00-3:30 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, AND FRIDAY, if needed. Just mention to me earlier in the day Friday that you would like to come, and I will usually be free to meet with you. Also, I am often here longer than 3:30. If you need to go to another tutorial first, tell me during the day so that I might wait for you.

Tutorial is a positive place. I like company and people who enjoy learning together. If you want to come to tutorial to work on homework and ask questions, I welcome the experience. Let's not approach tutorial as a place for problems only. You can impress me with your desire to improve and to achieve by coming and having this personal relationship.
