American Studies Summer Workshop
The Lovett School is pleased to offer its American Studies Institute 2012 teacher workshop, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised?  American Culture: 1970-present." Held June 7-8, 2012, on Lovett's Atlanta campus, the workshop offers sessions on recent revolutions in American art, literature, politics, music, economics, media, and more.  The workshop is geared toward secondary school teachers who want to encourage their students to learn about America from an interdisciplinary perspective, but all educators and graduate students are welcomed. Participants who successfully complete this workshop will earn one PLU. As always, ALL conference materials and ALL meals are included with the price.

John Hunter and the World Peace Game
Trinity School is pleased to invite Lovett faculty to a two-day master class session with John Hunter, teacher and inventor of the World Peace Game.  Mr. Hunter’s TED Talk  http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/john_hunter_on_the_world_peace_game.html and his unique approach to teaching and learning was voted the "most influential TED Talk of 2011" by TED and the Huffington Post.  Mr. Hunter will be visiting Atlanta on June 20 and 21 on the heels of his well-received keynote address at this year's NAIS Conference in Seattle http://www.trinityatl.org/  Trinity School is excited to serve as host in partnership with the http://martininstitute.org/]Martin Institute for Teaching Excellence.  Master Classes will be at Trinity School from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on these two days. The High Museum of Art 2012 Summer Teacher Institutes
Summer break is just around the corner, and The High Museum of Art hopes you are making plans to begin your break at one of the High’s two teacher institutes. Each institute is open to K-12 teachers of all disciplines. Teacher institutes at the High include both large-group presentations and subject-based workshops with expert instructors who will model hands-on classroom lessons. The High Museum is excited to present Fast Forward: Modern Moments 1913 - 2013 Summer Teacher Institute from June 5 – 7.  Experience 100 years of radical artistic development, from 1913 to 2013, reflected by artworks drawn from the extraordinary collections of the Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition demonstrates innovative approaches that emerged during six pivotal moments in the 20th century and the dynamic change they affected. This three-day session includes subject-based workshops with expert instructors who will model hands-on classroom lessons. Participants will receive course-related lesson plans, bibliographies, and resource materials. The High is pleased to offer the Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting Summer Teacher Institute from June 12 - 14. Few artists have captured the public's imagination like Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera. The myths that surrounded them during their lifetime arose not only from their significant body of work, but also from their active participation in the historical happenings around them. This three-day session includes subject-based workshops with expert instructors who will model hands-on classroom lessons. Harpeth Hall Center for Innovative Educators Summer 2021 Workshops
Through the Harpeth Hall Center for Innovative Educators, teachers can participate in hands-on, engaging workshops this summer. Three workshops are offered: June 4 (Promoting Independent Learning: Approaches to Flipped and Blended Classrooms), June 5 (Creating Your Own E-Text), and June 17 (Leading the Way: How to integrate leadership development within your school's curriculum and culture) on the Harpeth Hall campus in Nashville, TN. The Gurian Institute Summer Program
Being deeply committed to ensuring that all boys and girls have the best possible opportunities and knowing that over the last several years, statistics show that many boys and girls are struggling academically, behaviorally, or emotionally; consider working with the Gurian Institute (www.gurianinstitute.com).  These are issues Gurian has been helping schools, parents, counselors and other service providers look at and provide positive intervention strategies for fifteen years.  An immediate opportunity to work with the Gurian Institutes is to attend the 11thAnnual Summer Institute. Learning & the Brain
"The Power of Mindsets" will take center stage in Cambridge, MA, on June 26-29, 2012.The Institute will examine the concepts of student engagement, motivation and resilience through the lens of “mindsets.”  The mindset of effective learners and effective educators will be identified and techniques for lessening burnout will be described. Lectures, case examples and problem-solving activities will be used to facilitate discussion of the various concepts and arrive at realistic, practical interventions for reinforcing a “motivating environment” in the school setting. “Innovation By Design” will take place July 17-20, in Cambridge, MA.  Recent research in neuroscience, cognitive psychology and behavioral economics offers deeper insight into how people learn and behave. “Neuroscience and the Classroom” will convene July 24-27 or July 31-August 3, 20112 in Santa Barbara, CA.  Brain imaging studies and cognitive neuroscience continue to give a clearer picture of how individuals respond to sensory stimuli and perform cognitive tasks.  This Summer Institute will focus on the application of neuroscience research to teaching and learning. STEM Think Tank and Conference
The Think Tank and Conference will bring together national leaders in K-12 education for girls and young women (independent, public, charter, and parochial), university K-12 outreach coordinators and researchers, leaders of successful university STEM programs, girls' informal educators, and members of industry.

The organizing team – the STEM Consortium – has chosen “Changing the Paradigm: Lessons Up & Down the Pipeline – K-12 to university to corporate” as the conference theme for 2012. Conference strands have been selected as follows:
  • Best Practices in Curriculum & Teaching for Girls
  • Girls in Coed Schools
  • Getting Started in STEM – What do we mean? How is it different? How do you do it?
  • Changing the Conversation – What message do we send to girls about STEM?
  • Community Outreach - How can schools use local museums, universities, science centers, and businesses to give girls hands-on experiences and access to STEM careers?
The Think Tank & Conference will be hosted on the campus of the Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, TN, July 18-20, 2012. Because much of the program is devoted to concurrent sessions, the program will draw on the best ideas in girls’ education around the country.  Conference fee is $200 for presenters and $250 for attendees.  Early registration must be completed by June 30, 2012. 2012 Teacher Training AP Institutes
The Marist School will offer College Board endorsed AP teacher training in  the Advanced Placement Summer Institute for new teachers, June 18 - 22.  Those who have been teaching AP in that subject for 3+years, various classes will start and meet from June 25 through June 28 and July 9 - 13. Throughout these Summer 2012 dates the AP classes being taught will include: Calculus AB, English Literature and Composition, U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History, and Art History.  Institute fees include classroom instruction, College Board materials, 2012 AP reading information and sample essays, teacher designed lesson plans, sample textbooks, light breakfast, and snacks. The Fischler of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University will offer an Advanced Placement Summer Institute on their main campus in Fort Lauderdale,FL.  All classes are designed to benefit the beginning AP teacher and those teachers who will be teaching AP for the first time in the 2012-2013 school year.  Various classes will start and meet from June 18-21 and June 25-28. Throughout these dates AP classes being taught will include: Calculus AB, English Literature and Composition, World History, U.S. History, Biology, and Art History.  Institute fees include orientation, cost of instruction, all AP packets and materials, and refreshments. Register for specific classes online at http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/apsi/

The UGA AP Summer Institute (Athens, Georgia, two sessions - June and July 2012) will provide teachers with an overview of the curriculum structure and content of specific  AP courses.  Attention will be devoted to the development of AP courses, teaching strategies, and the relationship of the course to the AP Exam. The Institute will provide tremendous curriculum staff development opportunities for both new and experienced AP teachers.  Through this training, the AP teacher will receive content, skills, and teaching strategies.  Instructor are experienced Advanced Placement teachers certified by the College Board who have demonstrated their ability to help other teachers prepare to teach Advanced Placement classes. Coalition of Lighthouse Schools iSummit '12
 iSummit 2012 is the tenth annual conference of the Coalition of Lighthouse Schools. The CLS is a group of schools that have made a commitment to one-to-one computing as a significant means to equip our students to be leaders in the 21st century. The conference focuses on three critical teams: Leadership, Learning, and Infrastructure. The real value of iSummit is that it is the only conference tailored to independent and charter schools which are engaged in a one-to-one computing program using Apple technologies. Smithsonian American Art Museum
Be inspired this summer at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as you join colleagues from across the country for an exploration of the connections among American art, technology, and your curricula.  Attend one of the week-long institutes (July 9 - 12 or July 30 - August 3) in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C.  Core subject teachers for grades 6–12 may apply as individuals or as part of a team.  Priority will be given to social studies and English teachers.  In the workshop, you will: gain expertise from museum educators, curators, and technology specialists through gallery talks, discussion groups, and hands-on activities; learn to use American art in the classroom to foster 21st Century Skills and higher-order thinking; make interdisciplinary connections among American art, social studies, and English; and share lesson ideas with peers.  Each applicant must submit a completed application online by April 2, 2012.  To learn more visit AmericanArt.si.edu.education/dev/cs.

New Teacher Help is a professional learning community on edWeb.net that uses Web 2.0 tools like a blog, guided discussion, a shared calendar, a document library, a wiki, and more to help new teachers collaborate and get to know each other, creating an important support network.  Teachers from all across the country are invited to a year-long series of free webinars, live chats, and online discussions that will provide mentoring and mutual support for the issues they face every day.  Topics covered in the free webinars include: Dealing with Difficult Parents; Making a Good First Impression; Career Killers; Classroom Management Tips; The First Week of School; Your Teaching Evaluation; Using the Lines of Communication Available to You; Things You May Not Have Been Taught in College; Being a Successful Coach; Building Relationships with Students, Parents, Administrators, and Colleagues; Your Mental Health; and Make Yourself Indispensable. Ed2Go at Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern University’s "Teacher Education Online Courses" brochure is available at: http://ceps.georgiasouthern.edu/conted/ceplumenu.html  Each of these reasonably priced “PLU-awarding” courses is six weeks in length, with two lessons issued per week.  The courses are project-oriented and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, supplementary links, and more.  These courses can be completed entirely from school or home and at any time of the day or night.   These courses start monthly, and the next year’s schedule is as follows: January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, August 17, September 21, October 19, November 9, and December 14. Georgia Council on Economic Education
The Lovett School is part of a national program called Economics America.  It is a comprehensive program of the National Council for Economic Education and the affiliated state councils.  (Georgia is GCEE).  GCEE has come up with 20 economic standards and benchmarks for students in 4th grade, 8th grade, and before graduation from high school.  Peruse these standards for ways to incorporate them easily with what you are already teaching.  To view the national standards, go to http://www.councilforeconed.org/ea/standards/ To view the full standards, go to http://www.councilforeconed.org/ea/standards/standards.pdf

The Georgia Council on Economic Education has posted the schedule of workshops for Winter/Spring 2012 at www.gcee.org. With the exception of the AP Workshops, there is no registration fee. Instructional materials correlated Georgia Public Standards are distributed, and lunch is provided.  To register, go to www.gcee.org and click on Register for Workshops. The list can be reviewed chronologically by date of the workshop, or alphabetically by workshop title. Highlights for the Upper School teacher can be selected from classes involving Fundamental, Micro, Macro, International, and Personal Finance programs. Middle School teachers can also attend the highly popular Economics in World Studies for grades 6 and 7 as well as a new program on Japan’s economic and political conditions.

Law Related Education in Georgia
The LRE Program at the State Bar of Georgia exists to serve teachers in their efforts to teach about the law in their classes.  LRE develops curriculum material for grades K-12 and hold workshops on various aspects of LRE and the law.  These workshops are designed for teachers who want basic training in law-related education, LRE resources, and teaching strategies, as well as basic substantive information about such areas as the civil, criminal, and juvenile justice processes; the federal and state court systems; and alternative dispute resolution.  As a result of Georgia's new eighth grade performance standards requiring students to analyze the role of the judicial branch in Georgia state government and to explain how the Georgia court system treats juvenile offenders, LRE has prepared specific workshops to provide teachers with both the substantive knowledge and teaching strategies necessary to fulfill these requirements in their classrooms.  Law Related Education offers their workshops, complete with written materials and teaching resources, at no charge, thanks to generous support from the Georgia Bar Foundation and the Georgia Civil Justice Foundation.  If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Deborah Craytor at (404) 527-8785 or e-mail at DeborahCC@gabar.org.

Georgia Educational Training Agency (Georgia ETA)
Georgia Educational Training Agency provides education courses to teachers in various Atlanta locales. The staff for Georgia ETA includes National Board Certified teachers; Teachers of the Year; Specialists in Reading, Math, Science, Special Education, Speech Pathology, Curriculum, and Orton-Gillingham trained Instructors.  Its mission for teachers is to provide Pre-K to 12th grade public and private teachers with instructional strategies and activities that are driven by scientifically based research. Georgia ETA is committed to all teachers, especially those who are not currently teaching but would like to keep their certificates active. NEW Georgia PLU Courses Now Online
Participants will have access to online, self-paced, video-based lectures 24/7,  and you will have two months to complete each course from the security of your own personal computer.  Course credit is approved by the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE).  Downloaded materials are included in the cost of the course. Marietta Community School Online
New online courses are now being offered through Marietta Community School and Ed2Go.  All of these project-oriented courses are instructor-facilitated and have been pre-approved by the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Standards Commission for PLU credit.  All 53 online courses are priced low, starting at $99.  Courses include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, and supplementary links.  Each class begins monthly on the third Wednesday and continues for six weeks. Math & Science Workshops at Dana Hall
Dana Hall Summer Programs for 2012 will be intensive, invigorating, interactive five-day experiences where the teacher will be the learner and researcher as you extend your own understanding of mathematical or scientific concepts and teaching strategies as part of your role as curriculum facilitator and developer.  For 50 years the Math and Science Workshops at Dana Hall have helped more than 5,000 K-8 math and science teachers from 485 independent schools strengthen their teaching. Participants will enjoy the Dana Hall campus in Wellesley, MA, and spend mealtimes talking with colleagues about new ideas and extensions of old ones. In the evenings, special speakers and activities unite each of the classes around important ideas in Mathematics and Science Education. 7th Annual Center For Innovative Teaching Sessions
The Urban School Center for Innovative Teaching 2012 (CIT) offers workshops for educators in key academic, co-curricular and leadership areas. CIT sessions are hands-on and designed to share classroom-tested activities and approaches that will enhance the program of middle and upper school classes. The symposium is designed for heads of schools, academic and faculty deans, and directors of technology. Session 1 workshops are held in San Francisco and are scheduled for June 18 – 22. MICDS Summer Institute
MICDS is excited to offer the 5th Annual Summer Teacher Institute. This Summer 2012 Institute features well respected educators including Jay McTighe, Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, Keith Devlin and Chris Dede.  Sessions include topics that will provide teachers with instruction on technology integration, brain-based teaching strategies and curriculum design principles. Workshops are organized into three themed sessions. Sessions will include a mixture of hands-on activities, keynote speakers and discussions (session 1: June 11-15; session 2: July 9-13, and session 3: July 30 – August 1).
