Tuesday, September 7th
Dear Parents and Students,
I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. The Home Links ( 1.11, 1.12 and 1.13) and a study packet for the Unit 1 math test are in the turquoise folder today. Students also have some work on common and proper nouns that they can finish at home tonight and bring back to school tomorrow. There is no homework Wednesday night, as it is Family Night. In observance of Rosh Hashanah, there is no required homework for Thursday- Friday. The Unit 1 math test will be on Monday, September 13th. Students may return this week's math as they finish it. We understand that there are many family activities that come first this week. :-) I am also delaying the start of tutorials due to Family Night and Rosh Hashanah. Students should work on the Unit 1 review and see me with any questions that come
up along the way. The students have been doing great work in math, and I am confident that they will do well on their first test.
Thanks,
Jen

Dear Parents,
I have sent home a homework packet and note for this week. I will be explaining the 3rd Grade Homework Policy and expectations in detail on Thursday evening. I hope that at least one parent from each family will be able to attend, as understanding homework expectations will be very important to your child's success this school year.
I am suggesting that students complete the following Home Links for this week:
1.8.1.9, 1.10
I also suggest that students play the game Number Grid Difference. Directions can be found in the Student Reference Book.
Students should be checking the math homework page for additional homework ideas. While we want children to complete Home Links, we also want them choosing activities on their own. I will explain this in more detail on Thursday.
Thanks,
Jen
Monday, August 23rd
Dear Parents,
A new homework packet went home in the turquoise folder today. There is not an assigned Home Link for this evening. Home Links assigned for this week are:
- Tuesday-1.5
- Wednesday-1.6
- Thursday-1.7
The students are starting to take books home from school. We have had conversations about selecting just right books, and I have started individualized reading assessments. Please let me know if you feel your child is reading a book that is too hard or too easy. Your insight can help me, as I am beginning to get to know them as readers. Also, please remind your students to return borrowed books to school each day. We are blessed with an amazing classroom library, and I want to make sure we are good stewards of this resource.
Thanks,
Jen

Dear Parents,
Please refer to yesterday's letter for an explanation of homework for this week. Tonight your child should be sure to complete Home Link 1.2 and bring it in to school tomorrow. Please do not have your child work ahead on Home Links. Whenever possible they should be completed on the same day that the correlating lesson is completed in class. We will complete lessons 1.3 and 1.4 in class on Friday, so please remind your child to have these links completed for Monday. Home Links should only take your child about five-ten minutes to complete. Please let me know if your child is having difficulty with Home Links.
Today we began discussions about selecting "just right" books. Ask your child about the five finger test. I will be starting individualized reading assessments tomorrow so that I will be well informed when guiding your child to make appropriate reading choices. Help your child remember that the reading log should stay in your child's homework folder. Student's should develop the habit of filling out reading and math logs every evening. Also, help your child remember that the turquoise folder needs to be brought to school every day.
Friday folders will be sent each Friday with important Lower School information and graded papers. Please be sure to check your child's Friday folder each weekend and return it on Mondays. Friday folders are the blue Lovett folders.
Well, the first week is drawing to a close and already the children are catching on to new procedures and routines. It's going to be a great year!
Sincerely,
Jen Foster

Dear Parents,
What a great start to the new school year! I am truly enjoying getting to know your children.
We spent a great deal of time today becoming familiar with 3rd grade homework expectations. I do not expect that the children will remember every detail at this point in the school year. :-) Tonight your child will need to complete math Home Link 1.1 ( front and back,) and he/she will need to bring it back to school to turn in tomorrow. The homework packets, parent letters and homework logs are located in your child's turquoise homework folder that he/she will bring home today.
This week, your child will need to choose two evenings to spend additional time on math-beyond the required Home Links that correlate to the lessons taught in class each day. On these two evenings of your choice, your child should spend a total of 30 minutes on math homework. Your child may
choose from additional activities in the homework packet, and he/she may explore the math homework page. You may access the math homework link by clicking on the math link on the left side of this page and then clicking the math homework link. All math homework should be recorded on the math homework log.
This week your child should also spend two evenings reading for a minimum of thirty minutes. This should be recorded on the reading log located inside the homework folder.
All logs and homework should remain in the turquoise folder.
The turquoise folder must be brought to school every day.
Additional math homework, math logs and reading logs will be turned in on Monday, August 23rd.
I will be talking to you more about homework on Parent Night, Thursday, September 2nd at 6:30 pm. Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have as we begin the new school year.
Sincerely,
Jen Foster
